Many people in Haiti can spend the major part of their lives without seeing a doctor because they cannot afford to pay it. That unfortunately leads them to get their care from the “street doctor” without a medical degree or even high school degree for that matter. People buy medications on the streets that are usually expired and/or ineffective because they have been sitting in the sun for days. Usually, those medications add to their problems instead of helping them. Every time we travel to Haiti, we provide medications to the patients that we see. Unfortunately, once we leave the country, those patients are not able to continue to purchase medications that they need for chronic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes. As part of our clinic that we hope to build soon, we plan to have a well-equipped pharmacy where people can get their medications at a reduced price.
